Pastor's Welcome
.

A Word From Our Pastor:

We tend to be a very transient society. Gone are the days of sitting on your front porch waving at your neighbors as they go by. We run from place to place trying to squeeze in as much as possible. The theme song from “Cheers”, that great show of the eighties, keeps swirling through my head: Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.

Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
                Sometimes you want to go
                Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.

Most of us long for a community where we feel at home, where everyone knows our name. I like to think of our church as both a refuge and a springboard. If you think this sounds like a bit of a contradiction, you are right. After all, a refuge shelters one from the world, while a springboard throws one back into it.

Nevertheless, I believe our church serves as both, and for that I am glad. At times in our lives, I believe many of us need a place where we can feel comforted and renewed by the love of God. At other times in our lives, I believe many of us feel called by God to respond to the injustice and suffering that exists in the world.

I believe a church, at its best, needs to serve as both a refuge and a springboard. Those who never seek refuge risk burn-out, self-destruction, and spiritual malnourishment. Those who never spring themselves into the world risk missing the joy of serving others as well as the sense of purpose and meaning that comes from striving to make the world a better place. If you could use either a refuge or a springboard in your life, I invite you to come, where everyone will soon know your name.

Grace and Peace,

Rev. Debbie Scott
